GLASGOW, Scotland — Canada exited the Glasgow Sevens rugby tournament on a painful note Sunday, losing on a last-second try to Scotland in a 14-12 Plate semifinal loss.

The Canadian men finished tied for seventh, beaten 14-7 by England in a Cup quarter-final earlier in the day.

Sean Duke and Pat Kay scored tries for Canada against Scotland, with Harry Jones adding a conversion.

A late Scotland try by Fijian-born Joseva Nayacavou proved to be the difference.

Earlier, Jones’ converted try gave Canada an early 7-0 lead against England, but tries either side of halftime gave the English the victory.

It marked the second straight tournament that the Canadians have reached the Cup quarter-finals. They finished fourth last time out in Tokyo.

The Canadians made history in Glasgow last year when they made a HSBC World Series final for the first time. They lost to New Zealand 54-7 in the championship game.

Canada went 2-1-0 Saturday in winning its group, defeating the U.S. and Japan and losing to Argentina.

Earlier Sunday, New Zealand booked its ticket to the 2016 Olympics, which will mark the debut of rugby sevens.

South Africa and Fiji qualified for Rio on Saturday when they reached the Cup quarter-finals.

The Blitzboks and Fijians came into the competition, the penultimate stop on the nine-event HSBC World Series circuit, 1-2 in the overall standings. New Zealand was third.

The Canadians arrived in Glasgow 11th in the standings.

The top four in the table at the end of the season qualify automatically for the 2016 Olympics, which marks the debut of the rugby sevens at the Games. The World Series wraps up next weekend in London.
