SHANGHAI, China — Jennifer Abel of Laval, Que., won the bronze medal Sunday on women’s three-metre at the FINA World Cup diving competition.
Shi Tingmao led China to a 1-2 finish with 383.40 points, upsetting world champion He Zi in second at 369.65. Abel, second entering the last round of dives, took the bronze at 364.05 to equal her best ever international result.
Abel was third at the 2011 FINA World Championships. Her score on Sunday was her highest since that competition.
“It’s a very satisfying performance,” said Abel, a two-time Olympian. “All my dives were very strong and they had to be in order to stay in contention. That was my goal.”
Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., a bronze medallist at the 2013 worlds, was also in the medal hunt most of the way but took fifth at 344.40.
On men’s 10-metre tower, Yamg Jian and Qiu Bo of China were first and second, and Ivan Garcia of Mexico was third.
Maxim Bouchard of St-Constant, Que., and Vincent Riendeau of Pointe-Claire, Que., were 15th and 16th, respectively.
“I reached my goal by finishing in the top-16,” said Bouchard, competing at his first World Cup. “I didn’t make any major mistakes.”
Canada ended the competition with a silver and two bronze medals. Abel was also third with Ware on three-metre synchro and Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal were third on 10-m synchro.
