MINNEAPOLIS — Edmonton’s Kane Waselenchuk defeated American Rocky Carson in three straight games, 11-9, 11-1, 11-6 on Sunday to win the 18th US Open racquetball championships.
The win was Waselenchuk’s 71st tournament title, breaking the career International Racquetball Tour record that he shared with Cliff Swain of the United States.
It was also Waselenchuk’s ninth US Open title, extending his record of most US Open titles.
On the amateur side, Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta. lost the men’s open division final to Mexican Andree Parrilla, 6-15, 15-7, 11-9, in what was a battle of 17 year olds. They could face each other again later this month at the World Junior Championships in Sucre, Bolivia.
Also, Corey Osborne of Penetanguishene, Ont. lost in the final of the classic pro racquetball division for men’s players over 40 years old to American Jimmy Lowe, 9-6, 9-5, 4-9, 9-7.
