Hughes wins Chrono Gatineau Time Trial

GATINEAU, Que. — Clara Hughes of Glen Sutton, Que., won the Chrono Gatineau Time Trial on Saturday in 23 minutes 56.76 seconds.

The winner of two Olympic bronze medals in road cycling beat out Americans Evelyn Stevens and Amber Neben. Stevens finished in 24:04.56, while Neben rode in 24:16.44.

Edmonton’s Tara Whitten was fourth in 24:27.24.

Other Canadian finishers included Rhae Shaw, who placed sixth in 24:51.42 and Calgary’s Julie Beveridge rounded out the top 10 in 25:24.62.

The course was two laps of a 9.2-kilometre loop, with a sharp hill of 500 metres at 5.9 per cent grade, as well as some technical corners including a difficult roundabout.
