ROME — The Italian Olympic Committee’s anti-doping prosecutor has recommended a four-year suspension for the Androni Giocattoli cycling team manager.

Giovanni Savio was accused of sponsoring doping activities by one of his former riders, Luca De Angeli, in a court case in the Tuscan town of Massa.

De Angeli was banned for two years and fired by Savio’s team after testing positive for EPO in 2005.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, De Angeli later asked Savio for money to help battle psychological problems caused by doping.

Savio tells the Gazzetta he was never involved with doping and says he’s confident new proof presented in the court case will help clear him.
