MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina — Canadian Monique Sullivan has captured her second gold medal at the UCI Pan American cycling championships.
The Calgary native won the women’s keirin event as the track portion of the competition wrapped up Thursday.
Sullivan also won gold in the sprint event, leading the Canadian track team to five medals overall.
In the championship race, Sullivan edged silver medallist Daniela Gaxiola of Mexico and bronze winner Jennifer Valente of the U.S.
Calgary’s Allison Beveridge was ninth.
Sullivan says her mental focus was tested during several rain delays.
"I had a simple race plan, I stayed focused, and I executed a good ride," said Sullivan. "Venezuela and I will have our final faceoff for the Olympic spot at the world championships next month."
The Pan Am event, which also includes road cycling, is a key Olympic qualifying competition.
Canadians Rhae Shaw and Denise Ramsden will compete in the road time trial Friday.
