STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Michael Rasmussen says he was misunderstood when he told a Danish newspaper that he wished some people dead after he we was banned from cycling in 2007.

Rasmussen said on Tuesday he never wished harm on anyone but was trying to explain his "irrational emotions" in an interview with Danish newspaper Weekendavisen.

The newspaper quoted Rasmussen as saying "there are certainly some people, that if they died, I would live happier." Rasmussen didn’t give any names, but Danish media speculated he was referring to cycling officials.

Rasmussen led the 2007 Tour de France when he was kicked off his Rabobank team for lying about his whereabouts and missing doping tests.

He was banned for two years and returned with low-level Miche Silver Cross Team in January.
