Holyfield in hot water for homophobic remarks

Evander Holyfield is in hot water after making homophobic comments during an appearance on the British reality show Celebrity Big Brother.

The former heavyweight boxing champion said on Sunday’s episode that being gay, “is a choice, come on, that ain’t the way nobody is made.”

Holyfield’s remarks stemmed from a conversation he was having with fellow contestant, Luisa Zissman, about whether there are any professional boxers that are openly gay.

The 51-year-old, who holds wins over Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Larry Holmes and Riddick Bowe among others, compared being gay to being born with a disability.

“If you were born and your leg were turned this way, what do you do, you go to the doctor and get it fixed back right,” Holyfield said.

The show’s producers gave Holyfield a warning about his comments and the Alabama-born fighter said he was simply giving his opinion.

Holyfield retired with a pro boxing record of 44-10-2 with one no contest. His career began in 1984 and his last fight was a TKO win over Brian Nielsen in 2011.
