Canadian doctor Galea feels remorse

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Canadian doctor who helped big-name athletes come back from injuries regrets breaking the laws of the United Sates but is most sorry for the suffering an assistant endured after being arrested at the border during a trip on his behalf.

A day before his sentencing in federal court, Anthony Galea of Toronto wrote in a letter to the judge Thursday he finds it inconceivable to believe he could make such poor choices.

Galea pleaded guilty in July to bringing mislabelled drugs into the U.S., including human growth hormone, to treat athletes.

He could receive 12-to-18 months in prison.

Galea was indicted following the 2009 arrest of his assistant, Mary Anne Catalano. Catalano avoided jail after pleading guilty to lying to border agents.
