HAMBURG, Germany — World series leader Anne Haug won the Hamburg triathlon on Saturday, an adoring home crowd cheering the first German champion in five years.
Haug credited fellow German Svenja Bazlen for helping her get into contention during the 20-kilometre cycle. Haug was first out of the transition, and closed in on the finish line in a classy group of five. But Haug broke with 800 metres to go and powered to the line to win by 14 seconds.
Non Stafford of Britain beat compatriot Jodie Stimpson, both of them winners this year, for second place by one second.
