MONACO — The IAAF has ratified the world record set by American decathlete Ashton Eaton at the recent world championships.

Olympic champion Eaton ran the 1,500 metres in 4 minutes, 17.52 seconds to finish with 9,045 points at the Beijing worlds last month and retain his title.

He needed to run under 4:18.25 to surpass the world mark of 9,039 points he set in Oregon in June 2012.

Track and field’s governing body also ratified Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland’s world record hammer throw of 81.08 metres on Aug. 1 at a home meet in Cetniewo, beating her previous best of 79.58 a year earlier in Berlin.
