Japan claims gold at world judo championships

TOKYO — Japan’s Daiki Kamikawa defeated Teddy Riner in the open-class event at the world judo championships on Monday to deny the Frenchman a record fifth gold medal.

Kamikawa won on a split decision to claim Japan’s 10th gold, its best haul at a world championships.

Riner defeated Germany’s Andreas Toelzer in the over-100 kilogram event on Thursday to claim his fourth world title and was bidding for an unprecedented fifth gold on the final day of competition.

Japan’s Mika Sugimoto defeated China’s Qin Qian in the women’s open final, meaning her country finished with 23 medals, including four silver and nine bronze.
