At this rate, UFC officials are going to have to start asking fighters to take it easy in training.
Jon Fitch is the latest casualty of the UFC’s injury bug as the former No. 1 welterweight contender was forced to pull out his bout next month against Aaron Simpson after injuring his knee in training, according to reports.
His withdrawal from July 11’s UFC on FUEL TV 4 in San Jose, Calif., is the latest in string of changes to UFC cards this summer as a result of injuries, forcing the promotion to shuffle a lot of fights and opponents around.
But one would have to say it’s tougher for Fitch. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter was hoping to rebound from a stunning 12-second knockout loss to Johny Hendricks at UFC 141 in December.
The loss snapped a six-fight unbeaten run, which included a draw against B.J. Penn in his previous bout. The 34-year-old was 21-1 in his previous 22 bouts, with his only loss by unanimous decision to champion Georges St-Pierre.
There was no immediate word on a replacement for Simpson, who was coming off a split-decision loss to Ronny Markes in February that stopped a three-fight win streak.
