London first NBL champs; Freeman MVP

LONDON, Ont. — DeAnthony Bowden scored 28 points and had four rebounds and five assists on Sunday to lead the London Lightning to a 116-92 victory over the Halifax Rainmen in the inaugural National Basketball League of Canada championship series.

The Lightning win the best-of-five series 3-2.

Gabe Freeman was named playoff MVP while scoring 22 points and pulling down nine rebounds for London. Eddie Smith had 20 points and seven assists for the Lightning.

Chris Hagen led Halifax with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists.

"What a great finish to an outstanding championship series, outstanding playoffs and an exciting regular season," said NBL Canada commissioner John Kennedy in a statement. "I know I speak for the entire league, when I say we’re very pleased with the success we’ve had this year and look forward to even bigger accomplishments in the future."

London’s head coach Michael Ray Richardson was named coach of the year after leading the Lightning to a 28-8 record.

"It was a great game with an incredible crowd, what we did was protect our home court and its an unbelievable feeling," Richardson said.
