Mike McEwen defeated Randy Bryden by a score of 4-2 in the final of the Whites Drug Store Classic. The team from Winnipeg, Manitoba received $12,000 in prize money for their victory at the Swan River Curling Club in Swan River, Manitoba.
After two scoreless ends, McEwen scored one in the third end and stole two in the fourth end to take a 3-0 lead.
“In the first three ends they were all over us.”, explained McEwen. “We were pretty fortunate to come out with the lead at the half.”
When asked about his steal of two in the third, McEwen said, “We had a couple of good shots early in the end. I guarded on my last and [Bryden] missed his run-back against two”
Bryden responded with two in the fifth end, but was not able to score any further.
McEwen beat Jeff Stoughton and Jim Cotter to make it to the finals. This was Team McEwen’s first spiel win since January. “It feels great to have that first win of the year.”, exclaimed McEwen. “We’re pumped for the rest of the year.”
Runner-up Randy Bryden beat Kevin Martin in the quarter-finals on his way to the playoffs. Team Bryden received $9,000 for their second place finish.
