Leites, Jimmo impress at MFC 25: Vindication

EDMONTON — Brazilian middleweight Thales Leites submitted Jesse Taylor in the first round at the Maximum Fighting Championship’s MFC 25: Vindication.

Leites (17-3) stopped Taylor with a triangle choke after just two minutes 27 seconds Friday night at the Northlands Expo Centre. Taylor (14-6) had taken Leites down, only to be cut by a strike from the bottom. Leites advanced position to slap on the submission.

In the co-main event, light-heavyweight Ryan Jimmo (13-1) won a unanimous decision over UFC veteran Wilson Gouveia (12-8).

The judges scored it 30-27, 30-26, 30-26 for Jimmo, who now fights out of Edmonton.

Former MFC light-heavyweight champion Emanuel Newton (13-6) won a unanimous decision from Dwayne Lewis (11-5). Lewis was supported by more than 400 fans from his home town of Fort McMurray, Alta.

Veteran welterweight veteran Pete Spratt (21-17) stopped Luigi Fioravanti (17-7) at 4:02 of the third round in a battle of former UFC fighters.

Victoria’s Gavin Neil (8-1) choked out Richie Hightower (8-4) at 2:52 the first round and Chase Gormley (7-2) won a unanimous decision over Ryan Fortin (4-3).
