EDMONTON — Marcus Davis took a decision victory Friday over Pete Spratt in a battle of veteran UFC fighters at Maximum Fighting Championship 30.
Davis (19-8) fed Spratt a steady diet of knees to win the first two rounds of the fight. Spratt tried to mount a comeback in the third round, but Davis was able to hold on for the unanimous decision victory.
The fight was a rematch of their UFC 69 fight, where Davis submitted Spratt with an Achilles Lock, and the second consecutive victory for the Irish Hand Grenade since being release by the UFC.
In the main event two more former UFC fighters battled it out in the MFC ring. Drew Fickett, who has defeated Josh Koscheck, had his five fight win streak snapped by Brian Cobb.
Fickett was controlling the bout in the first round and almost submitted Cobb with a Rear Naked Choke. But Cobb reversed the hold and ground and pounded his way to a late first round, upset victory.
The win was Cobb’s (19-6) fourth consecutive.
“I’m very blessed, no one thought I would win,” said Cobb. “I used that as motivation.
“(It was the) biggest win in my career hands down. Very excited and hope it gives me a title shot in the MFC.”
Alberta’s Sheldon Westcott soundly defeated Thomas Denny with a three round unanimous decision. The two fighters previously met at MFC 28 where the fight ended in an unsatisfying draw. This time there was no question as Westcott dominated the contest.
Earlier in the night, the undefeated Dhiego Lima kept his record perfect at 6-0 with a first round stoppage of Jamie Toney. Lima has never gone to a decision in his career.
In a strange decision, Robert Washington was announced as the split decision winner in his fight with Curtis Demarce. Later in the event, the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission reversed the decision saying the fight was awarded in error. Instead, Demarce went home with the split decision victory.
“I’m not happy with my performance,” said Demarce. “I like to stand and bang, I promise next time put on a show.”
Also on the card, Andreas Spang had the sole submission on the night defeating Cody Krahn by Guillotine; Mukai Maromo stopped Scott Cleve with strikes in the first round; and Garret Nybakken defeated Jevon Marshall with what looked to be a premature stoppage 16 seconds into their fight.
