Every year all professional leagues have a draft. Inspired to maintain parity, while importing new players into their respective leagues, every team hires plenty of scouts and commits to plenty of research to make sure they make the right decisions.
Of course, even with a great deal of money involved, the professional teams don’t always make the correct choices. The fans are always the first to critique the drafts. Who could forget the Eagles fans booing when Donovan McNabb selected. It’s always entertaining to hear the Jets fans boo their team’s management whenever their picks are made.
In the NBA, it has become an annual tradition for Knicks fans to boo when their picks are made. Fantasy sports is the answer to the rousing suspicions of sports fans. It finally allows fans an opportunity to prove that they can assemble a better draft and a better team than the professionals.
It truly is a fantasy.
On that note, one of the most exciting moments of the fantasy football season is upon us. Millions of football fans throughout North America will assemble for their fantasy drafts. While it would be foolhardy for anyone to believe that they finally attained the perfect draft, here’s a look at a mock draft that I have assembled. Note where certain players landed, and more importantly, how the draft breaks down by positions.

ROUND 1
PICK 1, (1ST OVERALL) LADAINIAN TOMLINSON, RB, CHARGERS
While fantasy managers might have the view of LT on the sidelines in the playoffs etched in their minds, they must recall that this is a regular season warrior. The Chargers showed some confidence in him this off-season, allowing his backup Michael Turner to head to Atlanta.
PICK 2, (2ND OVERALL) BRIAN WESTBROOK, RB, EAGLES
Once known as being brittle, in a season in which most running backs went down, Westbrook remained strong. He’s the best receiving tailback in the league.
PICK 3 (3RD OVERALL) ADRIAN PETERSON, RB, VIKINGS
We have to buy into the hype, but buyer beware, this is a guy with an injury-prone label, and had several poor performances last season.
PICK 4 (4TH OVERALL) JOSEPH ADDAI, RB, COLTS
A great system running back who can rush and receive, Addai is first finding his prime.
PICK 5 (5TH OVERALL) TOM BRADY, QB, PATRIOTS
It’s time to grab a quarterback, and after breaking records last season, Brady will offer and solid follow-up with 40-plus touchdowns and few interceptions.
PICK 6 (6TH OVERALL) RANDY MOSS, WR, PATRIOTS
The best wide out in the game has all the tools and seems motivated in New England.
PICK 7 (7TH OVERALL), STEVEN JACKSON, RB, RAMS
Don’t let his early groin injury scare you, Jackson enjoyed a sensational second half last season, however, I’m getting concerned about his contract hold out.
PICK 8 (8TH OVERALL) CLINTON PORTIS, RB, REDSKINS
He’s not just a comedian, but one of the more consistent running backs who proved to be healthy last season.
PICK 9 (9TH OVERALL) MARION BARBER, RB, COWBOYS
The starting job is now his, which means the double-digit touchdowns will be accompanied by greater than 1,000 rushing yards.
PICK 10 (10TH OVERALL) FRANK GORE, RB, 49ERS
Fresh off a tough season, Gore should perform at a higher level this season as Mike Martz should alleviate the predictability of the running game. While fantasy managers most recently remember Kevin Jones’ struggles under Martz, Marshall Faulk may prove to be a better comparison.
ROUND 2
PICK 1 (11TH OVERALL) LARRY JOHNSON, RB, CHIEFS
One bad season does not end a career. Healthy and ready to go, expect Johnson to surpass 1200 rushing yards.
PICK 2 (12TH OVERALL) MARSHAWN LYNCH, RB, BILLS
A tumultuous off-season has ended, and Lynch now returns to his sanctuary, the playing field.
PICK 3 (13TH OVERALL) PEYTON MANNING, QB, COLTS
This guy has never missed a game in his 10-year career, why start now? A healthy Marvin Harrison will help.
PICK 4 (14TH OVERALL) RYAN GRANT, RB, PACKERS
Perhaps the MVP of the second-half, let’s see if he can hold off Brandon Jackson for a second straight season.
PICK 5 (15TH OVERALL) TERRELL OWENS, WR, COWBOYS
He demands the ball, and that’s a good thing in fantasy circles.
PICK 6 (16TH OVERALL) TONY ROMO, QB, COWBOYS
A high-flying offense thanks to his passes to T.O. and Jason Witten. He once again has something to prove after a poor post-season.
PICK 7 (17TH OVERALL) BRAYLON EDWARDS, WR, BROWNS
This year he displays his staying power. The Browns re-signing of Derek Anderson this off-season is huge for Edwards.
PICK 8 (18TH OVERALL) JAMAL LEWIS, RB, BROWNS
Mr. Consistency should once again rack up plenty of yardage, while taking advantage of the goal line opportunities.
PICK 9 (19TH OVERALL) EARNEST GRAHAM, RB, BUCCANEERS
There are some concerns that the Bucs will deploy a split backfield, but you have to assume after his big ’07 season, Graham will receive the majority of the touches.
PICK 10 (20TH OVERALL) MAURICE JONES-DREW, RB, JAGUARS
The little guy that can should see an increased role in his third season. He’s the Jaguars best playmaker when it comes to both rushing and receiving.
ROUND 3
PICK 1 (21ST OVERALL) REGGIE WAYNE, WR, COLTS
He finally evolved as the lead receiver last season when Harrison went down, and this year should do even better if Harrison could provide a diversion.
PICK 2 (22ND OVERALL) DREW BREES, QB, SAINTS
Ignore the poor start to last season and you’ll realize how great Drew Brees can actually be.
PICK 3 (23RD OVERALL) BRANDON JACOBS, RB, GIANTS
The 260 lbs. running back is a big target who can suffer some bumps and bruises but he can also plow the ball through the goal line.
PICK 4 (24TH OVERALL) LARRY FITZGERALD, WR, CARDINALS
Clearly the No. 1 option for the Cardinals, Fitzgerald should reach 1400 receiving yards for the third time in his career.
PICK 5 (25TH OVERALL) WILLIS MCGAHEE, RB, RAVENS
Enjoyed a fine bounce-back season in Baltimore. However, his knee is once again causing pain, perhaps opening the door for Ray Rice to take over.
PICK 6 (26TH OVERALL) WILLIE PARKER, RB, STEELERS
The speedster is fresh off an injury, plus has a rookie breathing down his back, but we can’t ignore the numbers he has put up in recent years. Let’s hope he can find the end zone a bit more this season.
PICK 7 (27TH OVERALL) ANDRE JOHNSON, WR, TEXANS
It would be nice to see what a healthy Andre Johnson can do in all 16 games. Let’s hope we get a chance to see what the Schaub-Johnson connection can actually be.
PICK 8 (28TH OVERALL) PLAXICO BURRESS, WR, GIANTS
He doesn’t get the praise that Joe Namath got when he guaranteed a win, which is unfortunate, because Burress showed a lot of talent and for the first time a lot of guts.
PICK 9 (29TH OVERALL) REGGIE BUSH, RB, SAINTS
The pressure is on Reggie Bush to evolve into the star player he was built up to be. Expect the Saints to provide him with the opportunities ahead of Deuce McAllister this season.
PICK 10 (30TH OVERALL) T.J. HOUSHMANDZADEH, WR, BENGALS
With more receptions and touchdowns, Houshmandzadeh jumps his teammate in this mock draft.
ROUND 4
PICK 1 (31ST OVERALL) CHAD JOHNSON, WR, BENGALS
Johnson remains one of the best deep threat options in the league and should once again rank near the top at his position when it comes to receiving yards.
PICK 2 (32ND OVERALL) MARQUES COLSTON, WR, SAINTS
The Saints lead receiver has been solid through his first two seasons. Expect a year of improvement after rediscovering his ability in the second half of last season.
PICK 3 (33RD OVERALL) WES WELKER, WR, PATRIOTS
The loss of Dante Stallworth should only increase his value as the Patriots safety valve for their passing attack.
PICK 4 (34TH OVERALL) MICHAEL TURNER, RB, FALCONS
The Falcons might struggle, but they always seem capable of running. Turner was brought in to replace Warrick Dunn as the lead man in the rushing attack.
PICK 5 (35TH OVERALL) CARSON PALMER, QB, BENGALS
There may be some interceptions, but plenty of yards and touchdowns too. The addition of a pass-catching tight end should help stabilize his passing attack.
PICK 6 (36TH OVERALL) EDGERRIN JAMES, RB, CARDINALS
He might be boring, but he is plenty consistent. Expect another season of greater than 1,000 yards for James, though be warned that Tim Hightower may steal his goal line carries.
PICK 7 (37TH OVERALL) ROY WILLIAMS, WR, LIONS
Prior to his season-ending injury, Roy Williams ranked as one of the game’s best. Back and healthy in ’08, Williams should regain his footing.
PICK 8 (38TH OVERALL) THOMAS JONES, RB, JETS
The addition of Brett Favre should shoot his fantasy value through the roof. Jones is a fine grab in the early rounds with a bounce-back campaign expected.
PICK 9 (39TH OVERALL) TORRY HOLT, WR, RAMS
He lost Isaac Bruce, a valuable sidekick, but Holt should still rank among the top of his position.
PICK 10 (40TH OVERALL) ANQUAN BOLDIN, WR, CARDINALS
The T.J. Houshmandzadeh of the Arizona Cardinals, Boldin is a safer target, which means more receptions and perhaps more touchdowns.
ROUND 5
PICK 1 (41ST OVERALL) BEN ROETHLISBERGER, QB, STEELERS
A breakout season in ’07 should garner some confidence for fantasy managers, and make them forget about the ’06 debacle.
PICK 2 (42ND OVERALL) RICKY WILLIAMS, RB, DOLPHINS
One of the greater shocks of the preseason, Ricky Williams has jumped Ronnie Brown as the starting tailback for the Dolphins. Having played in just one game over the past two seasons, Williams should be fresh for the ’08 season.
PICK 3 (43RD OVERALL) JULIUS JONES, RB, SEAHAWKS
A change of venue should do him some good, plus there’s no Marion Barber to steal his touchdowns.
PICK 4 (44TH OVERALL) SANTONIO HOLMES, WR, STEELERS
Fresh off his best season, Holmes has evolved as the top wide out on the Steelers, expect him to eclipse 1200 yards with six-plus touchdowns.
PICK 5 (45TH OVERALL) DEREK ANDERSON, QB, BROWNS
Adding Dante Stallworth to the receiving crew only sharpens Anderson’s weapons. We’ll find out is he can hurl 30 touchdowns in ’08. Of course, Brady Quinn is quietly waiting for Anderson to implode.
PICK 6 (46TH OVERALL) STEVE SMITH, WR, PANTHERS
He’ll miss the first two games of the season then return as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. As long as Delhomme is healthy, he’s a fantasy stud.
PICK 7 (47th OVERALL) LENDALE WHITE, RB, TITANS
The big guy in the Titans backfield is fresh off his best season to date with greater than 1100 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, however, the competition is fierce with Chris Johnson making a case to join him in the Titans running back shuffle.
PICK 8 (48TH OVERALL) JASON WITTEN, TE, COWBOYS
The new leader of the tight-end class, Witten was sensational in ’07, plus his health and youth make him a safer pick than Gates and Gonzalez.
PICK 9 (49TH OVERALL) BRETT FAVRE, QB, NY JETS
It should take him a few weeks to get acquainted with his teammates, but at the end of the first quarter of the season, the 38-year-old field general will realize the talent that he has on his squad, and start hoisting touchdowns in the Meadowlands.
PICK 10 (50TH OVERALL) ANTONIO GATES, TE, CHARGERS
The 6’4 260 lbs. tight end has some pain in his toe. It may seem like an odd injury to slow the big guy down but it seems like an assortment of injuries have plagued Gates over the past few seasons.
ROUND 6
PICK 1 (51ST OVERALL) KELLEN WINSLOW, TE, BROWNS
He surpasses Tony Gonzalez to rank 3rd among tight ends because of his youth, plus the Browns explosive offense.
PICK 2 (52ND OVERALL) BRANDON MARSHALL, WR, BRONCOS
Poor behavior will cost him the first few games, the combination of youth and solid production make him a decent pick in the 6th round.
PICK 3 (53RD OVERALL) CALVIN JOHNSON, WR, LIONS
This is a great sleeper pick, an ultra-talented receiver who can change a game. Expect 1,000 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns this season.
PICK 4 (54TH OVERALL) MATT HASSELBECK, QB, SEAHAWKS
It’s not good when a quarterback loses his first three receivers (Deion Branch, Bobby Engram, and D.J. Hackett), but somehow Mike Holmgren will find a way to make the offense work.
PICK 5 (55TH OVERALL) DARREN MCFADDEN, RB, RAIDERS
The hyped back similar to Adrian Peterson, it’s just a question of how many carries he gets in a backfield featuring Justin Fargas.
PICK 6 (56TH OVERALL) MATT FORTE, RB, BEARS
Unproven yes, but Matt Forte will learn through trial by fire. Let’s hope the passing game can alleviate some of the pressure for Forte, though you should be warned, it is not all that likely.
PICK 7 (57TH OVERALL) LAURENCE MARONEY, RB, PATRIOTS
The pressure will be on Maroney from the start. If he struggles, Lamont Jordan and Sammy Morris are on standby.
PICK 8 (58TH OVERALL) TONY GONZALEZ, TE, CHIEFS
The future Hall of Fame tight end has a struggling offense in K.C., which should limit his visits to the end zone.
PICK 9 (59TH OVERALL) FRED TAYLOR, RB, JAGUARS
He has danced around the injuries over the past two seasons but it is about time that he gives way to Maurice Jones-Drew.
PICK 10 (60TH OVERALL) DEANGELO WILLIAMS, RB, PANTHERS
Everyone is quick to write this guy off, but he has improved in his first two seasons, and last season averaged an impressive five yards per carry. Don’t expect Jonathan Stewart to steal his job quite yet.
ROUND 7
PICK 1 (61ST OVERALL) DONOVAN MCNABB, QB, EAGLES
Now that he is another season removed from major knee surgery, McNabb should build on his numbers from last season, though the Eagles are once again lacking at the wide out position.
PICK 2 (62nd OVERALL) SELVIN YOUNG, RB, BRONCOS
With Travis Henry gone, Young is expected to start. His inability to win over the confidence of Mike Shanahan has him available in the middle rounds of fantasy drafts. That makes him a great sleeper choice.
PICK 3 (63rd OVERALL) LAVERANUES COLES, WR, JETS
A fine sleeper pick, Laveranues Coles should enjoy a career season. Already with several great seasons in his career, Coles has never had a quarterback who can utilize the deep ball like Favre.
PICK 4 (64th OVERALL) RODDY WHITE, WR, FALCONS
A very talented wide out, but think of Lee Evans from last season. With an inexperienced quarterback and few offensive weapons, White will find plenty of defensive pressure.
PICK 5 (65TH OVERALL) HINES WARD, WR, STEELERS
The wily ole veteran can still reach 1,000 receiving yards, but Santonio Holmes is clearly the go-to guy.
PICK 6 (66TH OVERALL) JEREMY SHOCKEY, TE, SAINTS
A new surrounding should do him some good, but for all his talking, Shockey remains an injury-prone, over-hyped player who has yet to fulfill his lofty expectations. 800 yards and six touchdowns would be a fine season.
PICK 7 (67TH OVERALL) LEE EVANS, WR, BILLS
A great mid-round sleeper, we’ve seen what he’s capable of (1292 yards in ’06). There’s finally some continuity in Buffalo with Trent Edwards named the starter, plus talented wide out James Hardy was drafted to help spread the offense.
PICK 8 (68TH OVERALL) JAY CUTLER, QB, BRONCOS
In each of his first two seasons, Cutler has blossomed in the second half, but with Brandon Marshall suspended, and some new receivers to break in, Cutler may struggle through the first eight games once again.
PICK 9 (69TH OVERALL) DALLAS CLARK, TE, COLTS
Now that Marvin Harrison is healthy and Anthony Gonzalez is more proven, you have to wonder what role that Clark will fill in the offense.
PICK 10 (70TH OVERALL) RUDI JOHNSON, RB, BENGALS
The hamstring woes have returned in the pre-season. His prior consistency makes him a decent middle-round pick, but be warned, he can’t be relied upon to start in fantasy leagues. Look for Chris Perry as a solid sleeper pick who may steal Johnson’s starting gig in Cincinnati.
ROUND 8
PICK 1 (71ST OVERALL) GREG JENNINGS, WR, PACKERS
His stock takes a fall because of his dependence on the deep ball. With James Jones more accustomed with Aaron Rodgers (they practiced together on the Packers second team last year), plus an unproven quarterback, expect some conservative play-calling, which hurts Jennings’ stock.
PICK 2 (72ND OVERALL) DWAYNE BOWE, WR, CHIEFS
A big-time playmaker, Dwayne Bowe’s progress will be stalled by a poor offense.
PICK 3 (73RD OVERALL) MARVIN HARRISON, WR, COLTS
A great sleeper pick, Harrison never did dominate because of athleticism, but more so because of his knowledge of the game and his crisp routes. He has the ability to return to 1,000-plus yards.
PICK 4 (74TH OVERALL) KEVIN SMITH, RB, LIONS
He has started with the first team over Tatum Bell in the pre-season games and has shown enough to maintain that spot.
PICK 5 (75TH OVERALL) JONATHAN STEWART, RB, PANTHERS
There is word out that DeAngelo Williams is making a push to stall Stewart’s starting career but wouldn’t you think if Williams was any good he would have been performing better by now.
PICK 6 (76TH OVERALL) MARC BULGER, QB, RAMS
He’s got something to prove after a down year but the greater question is the health of his offensive line. Steven Jackson’s holdout is not helping him prepare much either.
PICK 7 (77TH OVERALL) ELI MANNING, QB, GIANTS
As sensational as he was in the playoffs, the winds won’t stop twirling during the regular season at Meadowlands, plus the Giants are often conservative with mostly rushes called during the regular season.
PICK 8 (78TH OVERALL) CHRIS COOLEY, TE, REDSKINS
Remarkable consistency over the past few seasons make him a more reliable, less-flashy, option than Jeremy Shockey.
PICK 9 (79TH OVERALL) TATUM BELL, RB, LIONS
Expect a split backfield in Detroit, with Tatum Bell getting 10-15 carries per game.
PICK 10 (80TH OVERALL) CHRIS CHAMBERS, WR, CHARGERS
He found the end zone somewhat often with the Chargers last season. Let’s just hope he doesn’t get left out of the shuffle with fellow playmakers LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson.
ROUND 9
PICK 1 (81ST OVERALL) DONALD DRIVER, WR, PACKERS
At 33-years old, Donald Driver enters the ’08 with four straight 1,000-plus yard seasons. Considering the Packers will be led by an inexperienced quarterback, you can expect a possession receiver such as Driver to improve on last season, as the deep ball becomes less of an emphasis.
PICK 2 (82ND OVERALL) TONY SCHEFFLER, TE, BRONCOS
One of Jay Cutler’s favorite targets, Scheffler is a fine sleeper at tight end this season. He should become a popular target for Cutler with Brandon Marshall suspended the first three games of the season.
PICK 3 (83RD OVERALL) CHRIS PERRY, RB, BENGALS
With Rudi Johnson hampered by injuries, and Kenny Watson considered to be a back-up, 26-year-old running back has been the most impressive through the preseason and appears to be next in line to start. The former Michigan Wolverine has fought hard to return from a dislocated ankle in ’06, and finally appears to be 100 percent.
PICK 4 (84TH OVERALL) LEON WASHINGTON, RB, JETS
A speedster that is often compared to Maurice Jones-Drew, Washington should enjoy a key role for the Jets this season. While Thomas Jones will start, Washington can still rack up 1300 total yards this season,.
PICK 5 (85TH OVERALL) JERRICHO COTCHERY, WR, JETS
While 82 grabs and 1130 receiving yards register as solid production, his two touchdowns were a disappointment last season. Expect an immediate spike in the touchdowns this season with Brett Favre tossing the ball around in New York.
PICK 6 (86TH OVERALL) DEUCE MCCALLISTER, RB, SAINTS
After a solid 2006, McAllister was bitten by the injury bug last season. Health has been an issue throughout McAllister’s career. Although he should take a backseat to Reggie Bush this season, McAllister can still rack up 1,000 total yards and plenty of touchdowns.
PICK 7 (87TH OVERALL) RONNIE BROWN, RB, DOLPHINS
He was at the top of his game before an injury derailed his season but for the first time in his NFL career, the potential truly shined through. Now he’ll start the season behind Ricky Williams as he recovers from knee surgery.
PICK 8 (88TH OVERALL) SANTANA MOSS, WR, REDSKINS
Though he has not come close to the career high 1483 receiving yards he accomplished in 2005, Moss remains the best receiving option for a Redskins team with an improving quarterback.
PICK 9 (89TH OVERALL) JUSTIN FARGAS, RB, RAIDERS
Fresh off his first 1,000-plus rushing yard season, Fargas now has the notoriety as the tailback ahead of Darren McFadden. Though McFadden will certainly get his carries, Fargas will likely keep it a backfield by committee.
PICK 10 (90TH OVERALL) KEVIN CURTIS, WR, EAGLES
Curtis established career highs last season with 77 receptions and 1,110 yards. The second-year Eagle should once again maintain his role as the team’s top receiver.
ROUND 10
PICK 1 (91ST OVERALL) DAVID GARRARD, QB, JAGUARS
18 touchdowns compared to three interceptions is remarkable, however, the Jaguars are a rushing offense with few playmakers in the receiving corps. In other words, Garrard will be steady but unspectacular.
PICK 2 (92ND OVERALL) JOEY GALLOWAY, WR, BUCCANEERS
Last season, Galloway proved to have a solid rapport with quarterback Jeff Garcia. Though he may not be the most flashy of wide outs, he is very consistent.
PICK 3 (93RD OVERALL) NATE BURLESON, WR, VIKINGS
His nine touchdowns were impressive last season, but now you can expect more consistency this season, as injuries to Bobby Engram and Deion Branch will move Burleson into the team’s top receiving spot.
PICK 4 (94TH OVERALL) ANTHONY GONZALEZ, WR, COLTS
Fresh off a strong second half, Gonzalez should enjoy an expanded role with the Colts in his second season.
PICK 5 (95TH OVERALL) MATT SCHAUB, QB, TEXANS
In his second year with the Texans, Schaub is hoping to stay healthy to tandem with Andre Johnson for a career season.
PICK 6 (96TH OVERALL) DONTE STALLWORTH, WR, BROWNS
The one player who actually regressed with the Patriots will now get a chance to shine with the Browns. Expect 800-plus yards this season for Stallworth.
PICK 7 (97TH OVERALL) BOBBY ENGRAM, WR, VIKINGS
He will miss a few games due to a cracked shoulder but similar to Brandon Marshall, Engram will have a chance to return as a lead receiver.
PICK 8 (98TH OVERALL) VERNON DAVIS, TE, 49ERS
Thus far he has been a bust, but now that Mike Martz is in town, there is once again hope for a breakthrough.
PICK 9 (99TH OVERALL) RASHARD MENDENHALL, RB, STEELERS
While he will play behind Willie Parker, Mendenhall should earn a chance to get 5-10 carries per game, and if he performs well, his role could expand.
PICK 10 (100TH OVERALL) RYAN TORAIN, RB, BRONCOS
Selected in the fifth round out of Arizona State, Mike Shanahan believes he has a first-round talent on his hands. Once he overcomes his elbow woes, Torain can play a large role for the Broncos running attack.
ROUND 11
PICK 1 (101ST OVERALL) MINNESOTA VIKINGS, DEFENSE
Take one of the best rushing defenses in the league and add Jared Allen to limit the put some pressure on the passing attack and you can understand why the Vikings are the first defense picked.
PICK 2 (102ND OVERALL) BERNARD BERRIAN, WR, VIKINGS
While the Vikings passing attack is far from proven, Bernard Berrian is a solid deep option who could become useful if the opposing defense concentrate on the Vikings rushing attack.
PICK 3 (103RD OVERALL) TODD HEAP, TE, RAVENS
After a down season due to injury, Heap returns as one of the best offensive weapons for the Ravens. If an untested quarterback starts for the Ravens, expect him to rely heavily on the big tight end.
PICK 4 (104TH OVERALL) CHESTER TAYLOR, RB, VIKINGS
The forgotten man in Minnesota actually enjoyed a fine season despite early injuries. Taylor set a career high with seven touchdowns last season, and his 1125 total yards are also impressive.
PICK 5 (105TH OVERALL) AHMAD BRADSHAW, RB, GIANTS
One of the many talented Giants running backs, Bradshaw hopes to put a tumultuous off-season in the past with a fine season.
PICK 6 (106TH OVERALL) JERIOUS NORWOOD, RB, FALCONS
Each season, Jerious Norwood seems to impress fantasy managers with a startling 6.2 yards per carry for his career. Nonetheless, the Falcons have been reluctant to start him, first with Warrick Dunn in the way, and now the acquisition of Michael Turner clogs the backfield. Though he won’t get a starter’s touches, Falcons coaches promise that Norwood will enjoy an increased role on offense.
PICK 7 (107TH OVERALL) CHRIS JOHNSON, RB, TITANS
A first round pick out of East Carolina, Johnson has impressed the Titans coaching staff during preseason, and will likely challenge LenDale White as the team’s starting tailback by mid-season.
PICK 8 (108TH OVERALL) FELIX JONES, RB, COWBOYS
While Marion Barber is the lead back, Felix Jones will enjoy his fair share of touches this season. Think of him as a replacement for Julius Jones.
PICK 9 (109TH OVERALL) AHMAN GREEN, RB, TEXANS
At 31-years old, it will be a challenge for Ahman Green to stay healthy for 16 games, but coming into the season, he is the most proven tailback on the Texans.
PICK 10 (110TH OVERALL) D.J. HACKETT, WR, PANTHERS
A talented, but injury-prone receiver, Hackett could enjoy a career season as Steve Smith’s side-kick.
ROUND 12
PICK 1 (111TH OVERALL) RAY RICE, RB, RAVENS
Rice has impressed the Ravens brass in the preseason and is next in line for the starting gig at running back if Willie McGahee’s health and attitude does not improve.
PICK 2 (112TH OVERALL) REGGIE BROWN, WR, EAGLES
Though the talent is there, Reggie Brown has yet to enjoy a career season. He’s broken too many fantasy hearts to be drafted prior to the 10th round.
PICK 3 (113TH OVERALL) LAMONT JORDAN, RB, PATRIOTS
The talent is there but what about the opportunity? If Laurence Maroney falters, Jordan can cash in on a sensational opportunity. He’s worth a late-round flyer.
PICK 4 (114TH OVERALL) PHILIP RIVERS, QB, CHARGERS
Fresh off knee surgery, Rivers does have the weapons to post a big season. We’ll find out if last year’s struggles were a result of growing pains or more a result of an ailing knee.
PICK 5 (115TH OVERALL) SAN DIEGO CHARGERS, DEFENSE
While everyone knows Shawne Merriman as the ultra-talented outside linebacker, Antonio Cromartie is the super talent who can shut down any of the game’s best receivers.
PICK 6 (116TH OVERALL) JAVON WALKER, WR, RAIDERS
He may have the career statistics and impressive athleticism, but Javon Walker has been troubled by a lack of good health and passion. This is a high-risk, high-reward option.
PICK 7 (117TH OVERALL) OWEN DANIELS, TE, TEXANS
He may not have racked up many touchdowns last season but he is a consistent option thanks to the 700-plus receiving yards. Remember, yards make a consistent fantasy option, while touchdowns can be hit or miss.
PICK 8 (118TH OVERALL) KURT WARNER, QB, CARDINALS
His 21 touchdowns were remarkable in the second half of last season, however, ESPN’s early reports that he was the team’s starter may have been premature. He is also up there in age and vulnerable to injury. I wouldn’t trust him as a No. 1 but he should work out fine as a second quarterback.
PICK 9 (119TH OVERALL) SAMMY MORRIS, RB, PATRIOTS
Before an injury prematurely ended his season, Sammy Morris was the weapon of choice for the Patriots rushing attack. The competition will be fierce this season with Lamont Jordan in camp but Morris is worth a late round flyer.
PICK 10 (120TH OVERALL) REGGIE WILLIAMS, WR, JAGUARS
In his best season to date, Reggie Williams was a star in ’07 with 10 touchdowns and 639 receiving yards. Even with all sorts of activity during the off-season, Williams is expected to start for the Jaguars this season.
ROUND 13
PICK 1 (121ST OVERALL) CHRIS HENRY, WR, BENGALS
The Bengals are desperate for some help at the receivers, which explains why they bring in the legally-challenged Chris Henry. Over the years, Henry has been inconsistent but he does have a knack for finding the end zone.
PICK 2 (122ND OVERALL) TIM HIGHTOWER, RB, CARDINALS
The Cardinals love what they’ve seen so far out of their pick out of Richmond. He may spell Edgerrin James at the goal line as a touchdown vulture.
PICK 3 (123RD OVERALL) NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS, DEFENSE
Though they are better known for their offense, the Patriots defense ranked fourth in the NFL last season. The loss of Asante Samual should not affect them much this season.
PICK 4 (124TH OVERALL) JAKE DELHOMME, QB, PANTHERS
When he’s healthy, he’s effective. Of course, the loss of Steve Smith will be a factor for the first two games of the season, plus Delhomme is far from a sure thing after Tommy John surgery.
PICK 5 (125TH OVERALL) KEVIN JONES, RB, BEARS
Health woes have limited Jones in recent years. This season he’ll play second fiddle to Bears rookie Matt Forte.
PICK 6 (126TH OVERALL) ALGE CRUMPLER, TE, TITANS
Fresh off a disastrous season, Alge Crumpler should take advantage of the clean slate in Tennessee. In addition, Vince Young is a similar quarterback to Michael Vick, a player Crumpler enjoyed his best seasons with.
PICK 7 (127TH OVERALL) HEATH MILLER, TE, STEELERS
A red-zone specialist, Heath Miller racks up the touchdowns. The 2005 first-round pick enjoyed career highs last season across the board with 566 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
PICK 8 (128TH OVERALL) PATRICK CRAYTON, WR, COWBOYS
After a fine season that included 697 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns, Patrick Crayton has earned a starting gig, allowing the Cowboys to cut ties with Terry Glenn. Expect slight improvement this season as the next best option behind Terrell Owens and Jason Witten.
PICK 9 (129TH OVERALL) MATT LEINART, QB, CARDINALS
He has yet to prove much in the NFL, but with talented receivers, and a 6’9" tight end, Leinart has the tools for success.
PICK 10 (130TH OVERALL) RONALD CURRY, WR, RAIDERS
The former UNC star has enjoyed an up and down career in the NFL. With Jerry Porter in Jacksonville, Curry is the likely first option for the Raiders this season. Perhaps the 800-yard mark will be reached for the first time in his career.
ROUND 14
PICK 1 (131ST OVERALL) DEVIN HESTER, WR, BEARS
The Bears special teams star will enjoy another crack at evolving in an offensive weapons. With Bernard Berrian now playing in Minnesota, Hester is the team’s best deep threat.
PICK 2 (132ND OVERALL) TED GINN JR., WR, DOLPHINS
Similar to Devin Hester, Ted Ginn Jr. will likely be utilized for more than his special teams prowess. The soft-tossing Chad Pennington does not help his cause.
PICK 3 (133RD OVERALL) BRYANT JOHNSON, WR, 49ERS
The long-time third option for the Arizona Cardinals is now the top weapon for the San Francisco 49ers. While the name J.T. O’Sullivan might not create much excitement for fantasy managers, Mike Martz certainly does.
PICK 4 (134TH OVERALL) STEVE SLATON, RB, TEXANS
With veterans Chris Brown and Ahman Green injured this preseason, Texans rookie Steve Slaton has earned all the carries. Thus far he has impressed the Texans and should take advantage during the season should one of the veterans go down.
PICK 5 (135TH OVERALL) DARRELL JACKSON, WR, BRONCOS
Once one of the better wide outs in the league, reports out of Denver have Jackson coming off the bench this season. It appears Eddie Royal has been him out for the starting spot.
PICK 6 (136TH OVERALL) NEW YORK GIANTS DEFENSE
The retirement of Michael Strahan and injury to Osi Umenyiora certainly hurt, but Justin Tuck should pick-up his game with an increased role. The high-pressure system of the Giants will once again lead to plenty of fantasy value.
PICK 7 (137TH OVERALL) SEATTLE SEAHAWKS DEFENSE
One of the elite defenses last season, the Seattle Seahawks should repeat their success this season, though there is some concern about the knee of Pro Bowl middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu after a preseason injury. Nonetheless, the Seahawks should once again put pressure on opposing quarterbacks leading to plenty of turnover opportunities.
PICK 8 (138TH OVERALL) LADELL BETTS, RB, REDSKINS
Clinton Portis certainly not the most durable of tailbacks, and two seasons ago Ladell Betts proved that he is capable of filling in. Consider this pick insurance for fantasy managers who already have Portis on their roster.
PICK 9 (139TH OVERALL) CHICAGO BEARS, DEFENSE
After a disappointing season, the Bears hope to improve this season. Unfortunately, while some fantasy managers will jump at Chicago because of name recognition, the Bears have shown little signs of improvement during the preseason.
PICK 10 (140TH OVERALL) ROB BIRONAS, K, TITANS
The man with the golden leg is recuperating from a groin injury. However, Bironas should return to his Pro Bowl status thanks to the Titans struggles in the red zone.
ROUND 15
PICK 1 (141ST OVERALL) BEN UTECHT, TE, BENGALS
After playing second fiddle to Dallas Clark, Ben Utecht should thrive as the best receiving tight end in Carson Palmer’s career. Expect 600-plus yards and six-to-eight touchdowns this season.
PICK 2 (142ND OVERALL) VINCE YOUNG, QB, TITANS
This is the pick for fantasy managers who can’t enough rushing yards. Young has yet to establish much of a passing attack. The optimist will argue that Alge Crumpler can play a leading role in Young’s development.
PICK 3 (143RD OVERALL) NICK FOLK, K, COWBOYS
Looking for kickers, this is a guy who should have plenty of scoring opportunities.
PICK 4 (144TH OVERALL) KEVIN WALTER, WR, TEXANS
His 12 reception 160 yards performance was sensational against the Jaguars but don’t expect many more this season.
PICK 5 (145TH OVERALL) INDIANAPOLIS COLTS, DEFENSE
They were dominant last season with Dwight Freeney watching from the sideline. This year expect more of the same.
PICK 6 (146TH OVERALL) AARON RODGERS, QB, PACKERS
The Packers clearly liked something that they saw from Rodgers over the past few seasons. Brett Favre also proved that the Packers have some solid weapons for the passing game.
PICK 7 (147TH OVERALL) JOSH BROWN, K, RAMS
Fresh off a career season with Seattle, Brown is automatic from within 40 yards and should thrive in the dome.
PICK 8 (148TH OVERALL) NATE KAEDING, K, CHARGERS
Considering all the talent with the skill players in San Diego, Nate Keading will get plenty of points, even if they do come one at a time.
PICK 9 (149TH OVERALL) GREEN BAY PACKERS, DEFENSE
One of the most improved defenses last season, the Packers allowed just 18 points per game last season, though they could improve when it comes to turnovers.
PICK 10 (150TH OVERALL) MASON CROSBY, K, PACKERS
The best fantasy kicker last season, it’s all about the Packers offense providing the opportunities.
ROUND 16
PICK 1 (151ST OVERALL) STEVEN GOSTKOWSKI, K, PATRIOTS
He played his role on the NFL’s greatest offense, but 74 extra point opportunities may be hard to repeat.
PICK 2 (152ND OVERALL) SHAYNE GRAHAM, K, BENGALS
A struggling rushing game may lead to more field goal opportunities. Graham missed just three field goals all season.
PICK 3 (153RD OVERALL) TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS, DEFENSE
They ranked third in the NFL allowing just 17 points per game, and led the league with 24 forced fumbles. They hope Aqib Talib can help increase the team’s interceptions this season.
PICK 4 (154TH OVERALL) KENNY WATSON, RB, BENGALS
Though he seems to be a third option, there is not much stability in the Bengals rushing game, which could lead to an increased role for Watson.
PICK 5 (155TH OVERALL) ADAM VINATIERI, K, COLTS
The legendary kicker was nothing more than regular last season without a single kick made beyond 40 yards. People who grab this guy are drafting bases on his glory days with the Patriots. At 35, those days may be long gone.
PICK 6 (156TH OVERALL) NEIL RACKERS, K, CARDINALS
As the kicker for a juggernaut of an offense, Rackers should once again rack up impress numbers this season.
PICK 7 (157TH OVERALL) STEVE SMITH, WR, GIANTS
The second-year receiver for the Giants shined bright when it mattered most. After compiling just 63 yards in the regular season, Smith accumulated 152 yards in the playoffs, including a career high 50 yards on 5 receptions in the Super Bowl.
PICK 8 (158TH OVERALL) SIDNEY RICE, WR, VIKINGS
Though there is little question about Rice’s athleticism but there are some real concerns with Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.
PICK 9 (159TH OVERALL) ROBBIE GOULD, K, BEARS
The bad news is that the Bears offense will likely be horrible. The good news is that the struggles in the red zone will lead to more opportunities for the kicking game.
PICK 10 (160TH OVERALL) CHRIS BROWN, RB, TEXANS
Though he has enjoyed some fine performances with the Titans, Brown is barely hanging in the NFL. The only way he it’s the field often enough to carry fantasy value is if Texans starting tailback Ahman Green gets injured. In other words, Brown should be a fantasy factor this season.
