BOLZANO, Italy – Melissa Citrini-Beaulieu of St. Constant, Que., and Marc Sabourin-Germain of Mascouche, Que., won the gold medal on mixed three-metre synchro on Sunday to cap a strong meet for a young Canadian team at a FINA Grand Prix diving event.
Citrini-Beaulieu and Sabourin-Germain, both from Montreal’s Club CAMO, earned 289.26 points in their competitive debut as a pair. Veteran Tagnia Cagnotto and Maicol Verzotto of Italy were second at 276.30 and Daniella Nero and Vinko Paradzik of Sweden third at 261.00.
"I am very proud of our performance today," said Sabourin-Germain. "We adapted well to each other this week in training. Our synchronization in particular was excellent."
The Canadians upset Cagnotto, a four-time Olympian and a seven-time world championship medallist in her home country.
Montreal’s Eloise Belanger posted Canada’s next best result finishing seventh on women’s 10-metre tower with Olivia Chamandy of Pointe-Claire, Que., 12th. Belanger was fourth in her semifinal. The top-three from each of the two semis advanced.
Citrini-Beaulieu and Calgary’s Caeli McKay were 10th and 12th on women’s three-metre.
On the men’s side, Sabourin-Germain was 10th on three-metre and Edmonton’s Ethan Pitman was 24th. Pitman bounced back to 10th on 10-metre.
