ST. MORITZ, Switzerland — Canada’s Carla Pavan and Mellisa Hollingsworth won silver and bronze medals respectively in a World Cup skeleton event Friday.
Pavan, who failed to reach the podium last season, grabbed her second medal of the campaign with a two-run time of two minutes 23.28 seconds. American Katie Uhlaender was first in 2:22.61.
"I am really happy. Coming off a tough week in Torino I felt I needed a redemption race today and I got it," said the 32-year-old Lethbridge, Alta., native, who won a bronze medal earlier this season in Lake Placid, N.Y. "I had two strong pushes and my second run was the best run I have had on this track in my life. I didn’t touch a wall the whole way down so I’m very excited."
Pavan’s fight to the silver-medal position on the podium was made tougher by teammate and Olympic bronze medallist Hollingsworth, who slid her way into the medals for the first time since the opening race of the season in Calgary.
Despite two sluggish starts, and sitting in fourth after the opening heat, the Eckville, Alta. native was clean down her second run on the historic track and posted a third-place combined time of 2:23.81.
"I have been really consistent," said Hollingsworth. "I did slide really well and this is a great result for me as we build closer to the World Championships."
Michelle Kelly of Fort St. John, B.C., was ninth in 2:24.91.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Jon Montgomery narrowly missed his fourth podium finish of the season after finishing one spot out of the medals.
The 28-year-old from Russell, Man., who captured his first-ever World Cup victory last week, posted a fourth-place time of 2:20.99.
Kristan Bromley of Britain won the race in 2:20.22. American Zach Lund took second spot in 2:20.57 while his teammate Eric Bernotas rounded out the podium at 2:20.67.
Calgary’s Keith Loach finished tied for 12th in 2:22.17, and Toronto’s Mike Douglas crossed the line in 16th in 2:22.66.
