The UFC 146 main card comprised solely of heavyweights continues to change, as Dave Herman will replace the injured Gabriel Gonzaga and take on Roy Nelson, the UFC announced.
Herman (21-3) is coming off a technical knockout loss to Stefan Struve in February, while Nelson (16-7) has lost three of four and is coming off a unanimous decision defeat to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143.
This opponent shift is the latest in a series of changes on a pay-per-view that has become reminiscent of a game of musical chairs.
Originally, Junior dos Santos was scheduled to defend his heavyweight title against Alistair Overeem in the main event, but after Overeem tested positive for high levels of testosterone, he was replaced by Frank Mir.
Mir was scheduled to fight Cain Velasquez in the co-main event, but was replaced by Antonio Silva.
Silva was Nelson’s original opponent but was replaced by Gonzaga, who was originally scheduled to fight Shane del Rosario; Stipe Miocic has stepped in to fight Del Rosario.
The only main card bout that hasn’t changed is Struve taking on Mark Hunt.
UFC 146 takes place on May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be the first time a five-fight UFC main card will feature all heavyweight matchups.
