UFC roundup: Cerrone gets Edwards; Vera out

The UFC announced a lightweight matchup between Donald (Cowboy) Cerrone and Yves (Thugjitsu Master) Edwards would take place at UFC on FUEL TV 3 on May 15 in Fairfax, Va.

Cerrone (17-4-1 NC) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 141. Prior to that loss the 28-year-old had won six consecutive fights in a 13-month span. Cerrone holds notable wins over Dennis Siver, Charles Oliveira, Canadian Chris Horodecki and former WEC champion Jamie Varner.

Edwards (41-18-1) is also coming off a unanimous decision loss in his last outing. The 35-year-old was outpointed by TUF 13 winner Tony Ferguson at the TUF 14 finale in December. Edwards has lost two of his last three bouts.

A light-heavyweight rematch between Brandon Vera and Thiago Silva was scheduled to take place at UFC on FUEL TV 3, but Vera was forced to withdraw from the fight due to injury. Igor Pokrajac has stepped in for Vera and will fight Silva instead.

Pokrajac (24-8) is coming off a 35-second knockout win over Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 140 in Toronto.

At UFC 125 Silva won a one-sided decision over Vera but did not pass his post-fight drug test. His victory was changed to a no contest and he was suspended for one year from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Silva (14-2-1 NC) had been a perennial top-10 light-heavyweight for the last several years with 12 of his 14 wins coming by knockout.

The UFC announced that a lightweight bout between WEC vet Danny Castillo and grappling standout John Cholish has been added to the UFC on FOX 3 card scheduled for May 5 in New Jersey.

Castillo (13-4) is a member of Team Alpha Male with Urijah Faber, Chad Mendes and Joseph Benavidez, and is coming off a split decision win over Anthony Njokuani at UFC 141. He has won five of his last six bouts.

Cholish (8-1) is coming off a TKO win in his UFC debut over Mitch Clarke at UFC 140.

The organization has also booked dates and locations for the fourth shows on FX and FOX respectively.

UFC on FX 4 will take place on June 22 in Atlantic City. It will be the organization’s first trip to the New Jersey gambling hub in over seven years. Meanwhile, the promotion returns to Los Angeles on Aug. 4 for UFC on FOX 4. The first ever event on the network channel took place Nov. 12 in Anaheim, but all the events leading up to the show were held in various locations around L.A.
