HOUSTON — UFC lightweight champion Frankie (The Answer) Edgar and challenger Gray (The Bully) Maynard locked glares again Friday, one day before their 155-pound showdown.
There was no shaking of hands as the two looked at each with stony faces for the traditional staredown after weighing in at the Toyota Center.
"All the preparation is done. Let’s have some fun," said Maynard, who clapped his hands as he bounded up the stairs to the weigh-in stage. "October 8th, tomorrow, I’m going to get that title."
Said Edgar. "I’m ready to do this man. It’s been too long thinking about this kid. I’m all about the anti-bully movement. Let’s put him to the curb."
Edgar and Maynard also stared daggers at each other at the pre-fight news conference Wednesday. The two fighters posed, their chests almost touching, with expressionless faces. They did not shake hands after the photo op.
They meet for the third time Saturday night. Their last meeting, at UFC 125 in January in Las Vegas, was declared a draw with Edgar (13-1-1) retaining the title.
Maynard (11-0-1 with one no contest) won their first non-title meeting, in April 2008.
Maynard weighed in at 155, while Edgar was 154.5 pounds.
Saturday’s card also sees Brazilian Jose Aldo (19-1) defend his 145-pound featherweight title against Kenny Florian (16-5).
A smiling Aldo weighed in at 145 pounds, looking far happier than he did before UFC 129 in Toronto in April when he had a hard time cutting weight.
A gaunt Florian also weighed in at 145.
