The Philadelphia 76ers are set to sign Daryl Morey on a five-year deal to oversee the franchise’s basketball operations as soon as this weekend, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Earlier this month, the Houston Rockets announced that Morey would be stepping down from his role as general manager of the team on Nov. 1.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports Morey’s conversations with the 76ers began shortly after that announcement and led to his upcoming appointment as Philadelphia’s new president.
Morey, per Wojnarowski, has a strong relationship with 76ers coach Doc Rivers, who joined the team at the beginning of the month shortly after he was fired by the Los Angeles Clippers following their stunning loss to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals.
The 76ers, with star Ben Simmons sidelined due to left knee surgery, were swept in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
