The injury report has gone from bad to worse for the Philadelphia 76ers.
The team said star guard Tyrese Maxey would not return to Monday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers after suffering a back contusion.
Maxey stayed down after crashing to the hardwood on a layup attempt in the third quarter and appeared to be writhing in pain. He walked back to the locker room gingerly but under his own power.
Philadelphia listed him as day-to-day following the game, while head coach Nick Nurse said the injury appeared to be "nothing too serious."
The 76ers, who trailed by six points at the time, went on to lose 119-102.
Maxey, 24, had been arguably the lone bright spot in a dim season for the 76ers that has seen ex-MVP Joel Embiid ruled out for the season while marquee free-agent signing Paul George has struggled amid injuries of his own.
The speedy ball-handler Maxey, on the other hand, was putting up career highs with 26.7 points and 6.1 assists per game.
Philadelphia returns to the court Tuesday for a road game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
