Celtics centre and recent NBA champion Kristaps Porzingis suffered a torn and dislocated tendon in his ankle in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, the team announced Tuesday.
The injury sidelined the Latvian for Games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals before returning to Boston’s lineup for their title-clinching win over the Dallas Mavericks in Game 5.
Porzingis hoped to delay surgery for the injury (a torn retinaculum and dislocated posterior tibialis, in medical terms) until after the Celtics’ season wrapped up and the conclusion of Latvia’s Olympic campaign in August, but will undergo repairs in the coming days.
The 28-year-old appeared in 57 games this season for Boston, averaging over 20 points as the team’s big man throughout his first campaign with the team.
He was acquired by the Celtics during the 2023 offseason before helping guide the squad to it’s NBA-leading 18th title in 2024.
