A memorable stretch will continue for Vince Carter next season when the Brooklyn Nets retire his No. 15 jersey.
The team made the announcement on social media on Wednesday.
Carter will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in October.
The Nets, of course, were the second team Carter played for during his NBA record 22-year career. The Toronto Raptors traded a disgruntled Carter to the Nets in 2004.
While Raptors fans loudly booed Carter for years, the hard feelings mostly disappeared over time and he received loud ovations in his last few visits to Toronto. His number has not been retired by the Raptors.
The Nets' announcement on social media is a video that features Carter watching a clip of a memorable buzzer-beating shot against the Raptors in Toronto in 2006.
It also shows a future Carter No. 15 banner beside Jason Kidd's already retired No. 5, with the latter going on to congratulate Carter for the honour.
"It's forever up there, it's 'Nets 15 Carter,'" Carter says on the video. "Can't use it again. Doesn't get any better than that."
Carter was the fifth-overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft and quickly earned the nickname "Air Canada" for his soaring dunks while a member of the Raptors. Carter was the cornerstone of the first run of success in Raptors history, including the club's first playoff appearance, in 2000, and the first series win in franchise history the following year.
Carter also played for the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks. Carter's final game came on March 11, 2020, before the NBA shut down the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and he retired at the age of 43 that spring.
Carter's number will be the seventh retired by the Nets.
