Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey has been fined $50,000 for violating the league’s anti-tampering rules, the NBA announced Monday.
The fine is in response to a now-deleted tweet that appeared on Morey’s Twitter feed on Dec. 20 concerning the Houston Rockets’ James Harden. Morey reportedly stated that the tweet, which was an anniversary post on a past Harden accomplishment with Rockets, came inadvertently from an automated app.
Morey left the Rockets back in October, where he’d been the franchise’s general manager for 13 seasons. Shortly after his departure, he signed a five-year deal to oversee the 76ers’ basketball operations.
He has long had a strong relationship with Harden, whom he traded for back in 2012, and the superstar’s recent discontent in Houston (as well as Harden’s list of acceptable trade destinations expanding to include Philadelphia) has led many to believe Morey may try to deal for him again.
