Ninth overall pick Collin Murray-Boyles made his Summer League debut Sunday, and the Toronto Raptors kept rolling with an 89-86 win over the Orlando Magic.
After crushing the Chicago Bulls by 44 points in their opener Sunday — setting a Summer League record by forcing 33 turnovers — the Raptors moved to 2-0 with another stifling defensive effort.
AJ Lawson led the way for a second straight game, scoring a team-high 21 points on perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the floor, adding five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Ja'Kobe Walter scored 16 while 19-year-old Ulrich Chomche had 10 points, three steals and two blocks off the bench.
After initially trailing, the Raptors jumped ahead to a nine-point lead in the second quarter with an 18-2 run. Lawson scored 11 on the run, punctuating the surge with an and-one layup.
Murray-Boyles had eight points and seven rebounds. The 20-year-old rookie was visibly still getting his bearings, recording eight personal fouls (Summer League allows 10 before a player fouls out), but his length, strength and feel were on full display as he grabbed three steals and lunged for a help-side block on an open Alondes Williams drive to the rim.
"I'm just a big fan," said fellow rookie Alijah Martin — while crashing Murray-Boyles' post-game interview — of the six-foot-seven wing's play.
While Orlando outshot Toronto from the field, three-point range and from the free-throw line, the Raptors won the possession battle for a second straight game. Their defensive pressure was notable once again as they had 16 steals compared to the Magic's 11 and won the turnover battle 29 to 22.
