The Detroit Pistons and Blake Griffin have reportedly agreed that the six-time All-Star will be out of the lineup as both sides work through next steps for his playing future, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
The Pistons are pursuing trade scenarios involving Griffin, Wojnarowski reported, and will continue to do so until the March 25 trade deadline.
“After extensive conversation with Blake’s representatives, it has been determined that we will begin working to facilitate a resolution regarding his future with the team that maximizes the interests of both parties,” Pistons general manager Troy Weaver said in a statement provided to ESPN. “We respect all the effort Blake has put forth in Detroit and his career and will work to achieve a positive outcome for all involved.”
Finding a trading partner may prove to be a challenge, though.
Griffin is owed $36.6 million this season and $39 million next season before his contract ends and he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
If a trade can’t be secured, Wojnarowski’s reporting indicated a buyout may be the path ultimately pursued.
Griffin, who rose to NBA prominence as a high-flying dunker for the Los Angeles Clippers alongside Chris Paul, has been forced to remake his on-court style in recent years to revolve more around playmaking due to injuries. The adjustments contributed to him being named an All-Star in 2018-19.
Injury concerns will persist no matter how Griffin’s situation is resolved, though. Only four times over his 12-season career has he been able to play more than 70 games. Last season, surgery to address recurring left knee woes ended his campaign.
The 31-year-old has appeared in 20 games for the Pistons this year, averaging 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists.
