The NBA G League plans to have its elite Ignite team face G League alumni in closed-door scrimmages in Walnut Creek, Calif., from Nov. 15-22, as well as in two streamed scrimmages in December, according to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania.
While all the focus has understandably been on the upcoming NBA season, the G League has taken a back seat. As things stand, there have been no reports of a confirmed season for 2020-21.
Still, it appears the league is dedicated to kicking off the inaugural season of its one-year G League Ignite program in some form. The team, which provides top prospects with an opportunity to play against professional talent within the NBA system while developing draft readiness and life skills, is an alternative to the traditional route of college basketball.
Some of the bigger names attached to the present roster are Jalen Green, Jonathan Kuminga and Isaiah Todd.
The Ignite also announced Thursday that they signed five veteran players to the roster that will provide mentorship and general support. Included in that group is Amir Johnson, formerly of the Toronto Raptors, who played 870 regular season games between 2005-19.
