One of the top sharpshooting free agents is off the market.
The Detroit Pistons are reportedly signing Duncan Robinson to a three-year, $48M contract, ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Tuesday.
His new deal with the Motor City is part of a sign-and-trade agreement, according to Charania, with the Miami Heat receiving forward Simone Fontecchio in return.
Robinson joined the Heat as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and has since spent all seven years of his NBA career in Miami. Last season, he played 74 games, his most since the 2021-22 season, and averaged 11.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting 39.3 per cent from distance.
His 190 three-point makes last year were top 25 in the NBA, while his 2.6 per game were tied for 20th. Robinson is a career 39.7 per cent three-point shooter.
The Heat franchise's all-time leader in three-pointers made got to unrestricted free agency after he declined his early termination option on Sunday, forgoing a guaranteed $9.9 million of what was a nearly $20 million deal for this coming season.
Robinson now joins a Pistons team in major need of shooting depth after Tim Hardaway Jr. departed to the Denver Nuggets in free agency and UFA Malik Beasley's future remains uncertain as he's under federal investigation for gambling allegations.
While Detroit snapped a six-year playoff drought last season, jumping by 30 regular-season wins from the season prior, the Pistons were bounced by the New York Knicks in the first round and averaged the second-fewest makes through the first round of the post-season.
Robinson's experience and outside shooting will no doubt help moving forward.
