Neither the Washington Wizards nor Anthony Davis is ready to commit to each other long-term.
Davis and the Wizards have mutually agreed to hold contract extension discussions until the regular season has begun, ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Thursday.
The two sides want to give it 20 games to let the relationship marinate, Charania adds.
Davis was acquired by the Wizards last season, but has yet to appear in a game for them as he dealt with a finger injury.
The 33-year-old wants to hold off on an extension to see how competitive the Wizards are, and the team wants to see if Davis can remain healthy, per Charania.
Davis is eligible for a four-year, $275-million extension as of Thursday. He is set to form a new tandem in Washington with Trae Young this season with hopes of contention.
