Just as things were turning around for Donte DiVincenzo and the Minnesota Timberwolves, they have hit a roadblock.
The seventh-year guard is out indefinitely due to a left toe injury, the team announced on Monday.
Minnesota added that the injury was suffered near the end of last Wednesday's loss to the Golden State Warriors. An MRI revealed a grade three left big toe sprain and the Timberwolves will seek additional opinions to determine the best treatment.
ESPN insider Shams Charania reported that DiVincenzo was placed in a walking boot.
After arriving in Minnesota with former New York teammate Julius Randle — in a summer blockbuster deal that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks — DiVincenzo had played in all but two games for the Timberwolves thus far.
While it's been a generally disappointing first half of the season for the 27-year-old after a breakout 2023-24, things had begun picking up of late. DiVincenzo started for Minnesota over its last six games and put up 17.5 points and 4.7 assists while shooting 42 per cent from distance.
Those numbers are better than his season averages of 11.0 points, 3.6 assists and 36.9 per cent three-point shooting.
His strong play had coincided with a strong stretch for the Timberwolves — now 22-20 and eighth in the West.
Minnesota returns to action on Monday against the third-seed Grizzlies in Memphis.
