Next year, double the NCAA football teams will have a chance to win a national championship.
The College Football team is nearing a deal to expand to 24 teams beginning in 2027, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Thursday.
The CFP has been studying the impact of expanding the playoff from 12 to 16 or 24 teams for months amid concerns about venues, the overall college football schedule and the future of conference title games.
The key hurdle to doubling the size of the CPF from 12 to 24 teams is making up the revenue lost by the elimination of conference championship games to accommodate the extra playoff games.
But supporters say it would give all programs more access to the playoff.
The playoff expanded from four to 12 teams in 2024.
