As long as Jerry Jones is in charge, it appears that Micah Parsons won't be going anywhere.
The star pass rusher's name has been floating around in trade rumours as he seeks a contract extension - one that would make him one of, if not the highest paid non-quarterback in the league. It also doesn't help that Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones questioned the team's salary allocation to the team's top players amidst all the injuries.
Despite that, Dallas owner Jerry Jones shut down any rumours and clarified his son's comments Tuesday morning during an appearance on 105.3 The FAN, a local radio show.
"He did not in any way say that Micah Parsons was an issue looking looking ahead at the future," said Jones. "That's never been uttered in this organization that we don't have a future with Micah Parsons."
Parsons is one of the best pass rushers in the league, and is deserving of every penny. Since entering the league in 2021, he ranks fifth in the NFL in sacks with 49.
The 2021 12th overall pick has also shared his desire to remain a Cowboy. "We're going to figure out a way for me to be a Cowboy for life," said the 25-year-old Monday on his show The Edge with Micah Parsons.
"I think J (Jerry) and Stephen see it that way too," he added.
Parsons is a vital piece for a defence that is typically one of the best, but it has struggled mightily this season. They rank in the bottom-10 in total yards allowed per game, points against, and red zone defence.
A big part of that, however, can be attributed to injuries. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence and corner DaRon Bland have missed 10 games, while Trevon Diggs suffered a season-ending knee injury on Dec. 9. Diggs, who signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension in 2023, was one of several players whom Stephen Jones was referring to.
Jerry Jones is proud of how his team has responded despite the injuries, and gave head coach Mike McCarthy and defensive coordinater Mike Zimmer a vote of confidence yet again.
"I think you're beginning to see the best [of Mike Zimmer], but maybe the best is still ahead of us," said Jones on his radio appearance. "Mike [McCarthy] has shown that his team can handle adversity.
"I give them both high grades this year."
With the Cowboys seemingly running it back next season, it should be a matter of when Parsons' deal is done, not if.
