Wednesday always is a big news day during the NFL regular season as most teams begin their practice weeks ahead of weekend games.
Injuries from the previous week tend to get updated on Wednsdays.
Here's a look around the league at some of the injury news ahead of Week 2.
Kansas City Chiefs
Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker (ankle) will not play on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Practice squad kicker Matt Ammendola will be elevated to the active roster for the game, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
Butker was the NFL's scoring leader in 2019 with the Chiefs.
The Jets cut Ammendola last year after he went 13-for-19 on field goals.
Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen has been declared out for Thursday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs because of a hamstring injury.
Allen sustained the injury during the first half of Sunday's 24-19 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Allen said he felt a slight pull and the hamstring tightened after he planted his foot to the turf during the second quarter. Despite only seeing 22 snaps, he led the Chargers with 66 receiving yards and was tied for the lead in catches with four.
Coach Brandon Staley on Tuesday said Allen's injury "is going to take some time." Allen is in his 10th season and has caught at least 95 passes the past five years, tied for the second-longest streak in NFL history.
Joshua Palmer is expected to get the start in place of Palmer and DeAndre Carter is likely to see increased playing time. Both had three catches against the Raiders while Carter had a 23-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give Los Angeles a 17-3 lead at halftime.
Tight end Donald Parham will miss his second straight game also because of a hamstring injury.
Cornerback J.C. Jackson could make his Chargers debut after undergoing ankle surgery three weeks ago. Jackson is listed as questionable after being limited in practice for the second straight day. Jackson signed a five-year, $82.5 million contract during the offseason.
"I think he's headed in the right direction, but I think there is still a lot to be decided before game time on Thursday night," Staley said.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Steelers running back Najee Harris expects to be available when Pittsburgh welcomes New England on Sunday.
Harris injured his left foot late in last week's 23-20 overtime victory over Cincinnati and was replaced by rookie undrafted free agent Jaylen Warren. Harris' leg was heavily wrapped in the aftermath, but he was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and plans to be on the field as Pittsburgh tries to beat the Patriots for just the second time since 2011.
"I'm OK,'' Harris said.
Asked what happened on the fourth-quarter carry that ended with his left leg being pinned awkwardly underneath him, Harris shrugged.
"Just football happened,'' he said. "Football.''
The injury, whatever it is, does not appear related to the foot issue Harris had at the beginning of training camp.
Coach Mike Tomlin said Harris had his foot stepped on, though Harris later told reporters it was a Lisfranc injury that took about six weeks to heal.
"I mean it's a little injury,'' he said. "I got hurt plenty of times, you know? I mean I had like six, seven weeks to let it calm down -- the original injury -- and it's good now there's nothing wrong with it, man.''
Harris ran for just 23 yards on 10 carries against the Bengals, though he did catch a 2-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Trubisky that gave the Steelers a 17-3 lead.
He declined to say whether he could have returned after getting hurt, saying the decision was out of his hands.
The Steelers managed to end a three-game losing streak to Cincinnati despite an offence that had trouble taking advantage of series of takeaways by the Pittsburgh defence.
The Steelers produced five turnovers, one of them a Pick-6 by safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Pittsburgh converted two of the other turnovers into a field goal and a touchdown -- both in the first half -- but did nothing with a pair of takeaways in the second half that could have iced the game.
"We've got to make sure that every time we get the ball from the defence, we got to at least put some points on the board,'' Harris said. "And so we need to get better at that.''
NOTES: CB Levi Wallace (ankle) and C Mason Cole (ankle) were both limited on Wednesday. LB Rob Spillane (eye) was a full participant. ... LB T.J. Watt, who is out indefinitely with a left pectoral injury, watched practice from the sideline.
Buffalo Bills
Bills coach Sean McDermott said defensive tackle Ed Oliver will not practise on Wednesday after exiting last Thursday's season-opening win over the Los Angeles Rams with an ankle injury.
The former first-round pick has an extra day to try to get healthy as the Bills play their home opener on Monday night against the Tennessee Titans.
"We'll just take it one day at a time. We'll see where it goes from there," McDermott said.
McDermott also said fellow defensive tackle Tim Settle will not practise Wednesday.
New York Jets
Jets No. 1 quarterback Zach Wilson took part in some light drills at practice on Wednesday.
Wilson had arthroscopic knee surgery last month and also is recovering from a bone bruise in his right knee after being injured in the pre-season opener at Philadelphia on Aug. 12. He's expected to be sidelined at least two more games, with a possible return at Pittsburgh on Oct. 2.
The Jets announced Joe Flacco will return as starter on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Some fans wanted the Jets to turn to Mike White after a 24-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the opener.
New England Patriots
Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was on the practice field, a good sign that he will play on Sunday against the Steelers.
Jones suffered back spasms in the Patriots' season-opening loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Indianapolis Colts
Colts coach Frank Reich said rookie wide receiver Alec Pierce is in concussion protocol. He developed symptoms after the team's 20-20 tie with the Houston Texans.
Chicago Bears
Bears coach Matt Eberflus says backup offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood is going on the non-football injury list and will miss at least four weeks.
Rapoport reported the former first-round pick (Las Vegas Raiders, 17th overall in 2021) has mononucleosis.
New York Giants
New York Giants starting cornerback Aaron Robinson had his appendix removed on Wednesday and will miss New York's home opener against the Carolina Panthers, Giants coach Brian Daboll informed reporters.
Robinson had four tackles and a pass defended in the Giants' 21-20 win over the Tennessee Titans.
Denver Broncos
Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said safety Justin Simmons will "miss some time" with a thigh injury.
The two-time Pro Bowler was hurt in Monday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Green Bay Packers
Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard (ankle) practised on Wednesday.
Lazard was out for Green Bay's loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
San Francisco 49ers
49ers tight end George Kittle (groin) did not practise on Wednesday.
The three-time Pro Bowler was out for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.
