The Green Bay Packers locked up an important piece of their defensive line by signing veteran pass rusher Preston Smith to a contract extension.

Smith, 29, confirmed the signing on his Instagram account. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports the extension is worth $52.5 million in new money over four years, meaning he is under contract for a total of five years with a chance to earn as much as $71 million.

A seven-year veteran, Smtih has spent the last three seasons in Green Bay after beginning his career in Washington. He has never missed a game in his career and last season he had 17 QB hits and 38 tackles, including 25 solo.
