San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has suffered a torn UCL after injuring his throwing elbow in Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Purdy will get second opinions, but the initial hope is that the signal caller can avoid reconstructive Tommy John surgery, opting for a repair procedure that would sideline him for six months, Pelissero adds.
On the 49ers' opening drive of the game, Purdy was drilled in the arm by Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick on a play that was ruled a fumble. Philadelphia recovered and Purdy was examined on the sideline.
Purdy was replaced by backup Josh Johnson. The 36-year-old, who signed with the 49ers in December, threw two passes this season. Johnson was also hit by Eagles by Eagles linebacker Ndamukong Suh and left the game, forcing Purdy back in.
