Derwin James is entering uncharted territory.
The Los Angeles Chargers signed their star safety to a three-year, $75.6-million extension on Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.
At $25.2 million per season, James' new deal puts him just ahead of Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton ($25.1 million) for the highest average salary at the position.
James, 29, has made the Pro Bowl in five of his six seasons with the Chargers. He also made the first-team All-Pro in 2018 as a rookie, and has been selected to the second All-Pro team four times.
Last season, James had three interceptions and 94 tackles over 16 starts for L.A.
The Chargers selected James 17th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
