Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes has been cleared from concussion protocol but is reportedly dealing with a separate injury ahead of Sunday’s AFC Championship game.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Mahomes has turf toe in his left foot, a sprain of the ligaments around the big toe joint, which has limited his effectiveness in practice this week. Rapoport adds that while there is currently no expectation for Mahomes to need surgery on his foot, he will be re-evaluated after the season ends.
“The next day was very sore, and every single day since then it’s gotten a lot better,” Mahomes said of his foot injury, according to Rapoport.
Much of the spotlight on Mahomes this week has been related to the concussion he suffered during last Sunday’s win over the Cleveland Browns. According to Rapoport, “Mahomes suffered no ill effects or symptoms from being in the concussion protocol, and the toe was deemed a bigger issue.”
In other Chiefs news, according to Rapoport, rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire will return to the field Sunday after suffering a leg and hip injury in Week 15 and running back Le’Veon Bell is expected to miss the game with a knee injury. Wide-receiver Sammy Watkins, who is recovering from a Week 16 calf injury, will be a game-time decision.
