Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes remains in the NFL's concussion protocol and "it's too early" to say whether he'll be able to play in Sunday's AFC championship game, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Schefter adds that Mahomes cleared "some big steps" on Monday, but he still must go through certain steps in the coming days to clear the NFL's concussion protocol.

Mahomes left Sunday's divisional round win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday after taking a hit on a third-and-one scramble. The reigning Super Bowl MVP attempted to get to his feet after the hit by Browns linebacker Mack Wilson, but nearly fell back to the ground after his legs buckled.

Mahomes was taken out of the game, ran back to the locker room after a short trip to the medical tent on the Chiefs sidelines and was soon ruled out of the remainder of the game.

After the game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said his quarterback was "doing great."

The Chiefs square off against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in Sunday's AFC title game in Kansas City, with kick off scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET.
