Could we be in store for a father-and-son reunion between Deion and Shedeur Sanders in Las Vegas next season?
The Colorado football coach reportedly has his eyes on the Raiders' opening, per Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
According to one of Bonsignore's sources, Sanders has a "very strong interest" in Las Vegas' head coaching job. He reports that the people from Sanders' camp reached out to the Raiders front office to express his interest.
The head-coach opening came about after the organization let go of Antonio Pierce following a 4-13 campaign in his first full season at the helm. Pierce took over midway through 2023, filling in for Josh McDaniels, who was fired after a 3-5 start.
While Sanders may be interested in the position, the Raiders have been busy interviewing plenty of other candidates. On Friday, they interviewed Detroit Lions co-ordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, and Kansas City Chiefs defensive co-ordinator Steve Spagnulo. Las Vegas is also scheduled to interview former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll this week and recently fired New York Jets coach Robert Saleh.
Samders' new-found interest in coaching at the pro level after two seasons in the NCAA ranks may have something to do with his son Shedeur getting set to join the NFL ranks. The younger Sanders is one of the top quarterback prospects this year after throwing for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 168.2 passer rating at Colorado.
The Raiders have the No. 6 pick in the 2025 draft, and are in desperate need of a quarterback after lacklustre production from the trio of Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell and Desmond Ridder.
And while the Raiders appear too low to nab Sheduer, if they want Deion to steer their ship, it appears they'll have to find a way to draft his son.
During an appearance on Good Morning America in 2024, Sanders explained that "the only way I would consider (a move to the NFL) is to coach my sons."
The Raiders' interest in the coach remains unclear at this time, but it is worth nothing the family has a long-standing relationship with new minority owner and NFL legend Tom Brady. Las Vegas owner Mark Davis has made it clear that the seven-time Super Bowl champion will play a pivotal role in the team's selection of a new head coach, general manager and quarterback.
Brady has mentored Shedeur over the years, even signing the 22-year-old to an NIL deal in 2022.
Could the Raiders, upon the suggestion of Brady, hire Deion as the head coach and then trade up to draft Shedeur to kick-start a new era of silver-and-black football? Only time will tell.
