Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams has informed the team he will not be playing under the franchise tag for the 2022 season, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
The two sides are also reportedly far from agreeing to an extension for Adams, who had a roughly $20 million tag placed on him ahead of the March 8 deadline.
This news comes after Aaron Rodgers confirmed he was returning to the Packers, but the terms of his new extension have not been confirmed by the team. Some reports suggested Rodgers would be signing a four-year, $200 million extension that decreases his cap number for the 2022 season — which would free up some money to sign Adams to a new deal without going over the cap.
An All-Pro wide receiver, Adams just completed a four-year, $58 million contract. In 2021, he finished third in the league in receiving yards with 1,553 and fifth in receiving touchdowns with 11.
News of Adams' refusal to play under the franchise tag also comes after a disappointing playoff exit by the Packers, who had a first-round bye but lost to San Francisco 49ers 13-10 in the divisional round.
Former Fresno State teammate Derek Carr has also made comments about adding the star receiver to the Las Vegas Raiders, saying he believes Adams is "the best" in the game.
Adams, who was selected in the second round, 53rd overall by the Packers in the 2014 NFL Draft, has played in 116 career games for the team, recording 8,121 yards on 669 receptions for 73 touchdowns.
