With only one win to their name, the New Orleans Saints are making a change at quarterback.
Rookie Tyler Shough is set to get his first NFL start Sunday as the Saints square off against the Los Angeles Rams, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.
Shough will be stepping in for sophomore slinger Spencer Rattler, who struggled in Week 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being benched for the rookie in the third quarter.
In his relief appearance, Shough completed 17 of 30 passes for 128 yards and an interception. It was his second appearance for the Saints this season after a short cameo in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, where he threw two passes without a completion.
Drafted 40th overall out of Louisville in April, the 26-year-old Shough made three appearances for the Saints in the pre-season, throwing for 333 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
The Chandler, Ariz., native played six years of college football, splitting time between Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville. In his final year — his lone season with the Cardinals — he threw for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions with a 62.7 completion percentage.
Rattler, meanwhile, has been steady if not spectacular for the Saints this season, throwing for 1,586 yards with eight touchdowns, five interceptions and a 68 completion percentage. He has led the Saints to a 1-7 record after posting an 0-6 mark in his rookie year.
