The Washington Football Team and 2020 comeback player of the year Alex Smith are expected to part ways, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Kim Jones report.

Smith would have carried a $24.4 million cap hit next season but once he is released, he will only account for $10.8 million in dead cap on the books.

The 36-year-old missed nearly two years while recovering from a serious leg injury before returning to the field last season. In eight games with Washington, six of them starts, he threw for 1,582 yards with six touchdowns and eight interceptions.

According to Rapoport and Jones, Smith intends to join another team and play in 2021.
