Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley and his family were inside their Pennsylvania home early Saturday morning when an attempted burglary occurred, but no one was injured, according to local authorities.
Police in Tredyffrin Township responded to a report of a burglary in progress shortly after 5 a.m. ET at Barkley's residence in Malvern. By the time officers arrived, the suspects had already fled the area.
Authorities said at least one suspect entered the home while Barkley and his family were inside. Investigators believe at least two people were involved and have released an image of a white SUV that may be connected to the incident.
"Our main concern is that the residents of that home at the time were unharmed, which they were," Tredyffrin Township Police Capt. Tyler Moyer told reporters. "They were fine afterwards, obviously unsettled as anyone would be."
Police said they do not believe anything was stolen from the home.
The Chester County District Attorney's Office said county detectives are assisting Tredyffrin Township police with the investigation and appealed to the public for assistance.
"We are incredibly grateful that the Barkley family was not injured during this incident," the district attorney's office said in a statement on social media. Officials asked nearby residents to review home security camera footage from around 5 a.m. Saturday and report any suspicious activity to investigators.
Authorities are also exploring whether the attempted burglary could be linked to a series of break-ins that have targeted the homes of high-profile professional athletes in recent years.
"We will look at all angles with this," Moyer told NBC10 Philadelphia. "We know it's been all over the news over the past few years about different professional athletes' homes getting burglarized."
Several prominent athletes, including NFL stars Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Joe Burrow, have had their homes targeted in recent years. Federal prosecutors have charged seven men in connection with those burglaries, with one defendant pleading guilty and receiving a 24-month prison sentence earlier this year.
The investigation into the incident at Barkley's home remains ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage to come forward.
