Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson won the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for his work in the community.
Wilson is the first quarterback to win the award since 2016 and will receive a Walter Payton patch to wear on his jersey for the remainder of his career.
He and his wife, Ciara, donated $1 million to Feeding America – the largest hunger-relief organization in the U.S. – and partnered with Wheels Up in an effort to combat food insecurity. They also encouraged voter registration for the 2020 election through the I AM A VOTER campaign
During his acceptance speech, Wilson invoked the famous words of Payton.
“We are stronger together than we are alone…” Wilson said. “To the young boy or girl who has a dream … who wants to make a difference … remember: Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
“Love changes things.”
