Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera has announced on Twitter that he is cancer-free.
“Thank you everyone for your prayers, letters, texts & notes of encouragement & support,” Rivera wrote. “It truly made a difference in my treatment & recovery!”
In a photo attached to the tweet, Rivera is pictured with his dogs holding a sign that says “We kicked cancer’s ass!”
Rivera, 59, was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer in August and received treatment throughout the season. His final treatment session was in October and he received the news that he is cancer-free earlier in the day on Thursday, according to his daughter.
Rivera never missed a game in his debut season with Washington, leading the club to an NFC East title for the first time since 2015.
“It’s a struggle,” Rivera said of his cancer battle earlier in the season, according to NFL.com. “It’s a battle. And I just don’t represent me. I represent all those folks. All those people that are afflicted, all those people that fight, all those people that have fought.”
