Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon will not be in the lineup against the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday night, but head coach Jared Bednar cautioned that the move was made out of precaution.

MacKinnon is dealing with a lower-body injury but it is unclear how he was injured. Bednar added that he is hoping his top centre will be back in the lineup Friday against the Winnipeg Jets.

The 26-year-old has been limited to just 36 games this season due to other injuries and a case of COVID-19. Despite the challenges, he still has 12 goals and 36 assists for 48 points this season, including points in his last five games.

On the other bench, Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin will be a game-time decision for the game after missing practice Tuesday. Larkin is in the midst of a career year, with 26 goals and 52 points in 46 games.
